MoU to ramp up trade with Canada

2026-07-06 MoU to ramp up trade with Canada

Thailand and Canada have taken a significant step toward deepening economic ties. Export Development Canada, Canada's export credit agency, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Export-Import Bank of Thailand to advance bilateral investment and increase trade and cooperation between the two countries and across the Asia-Pacific region.

The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two organisations to support projects in both countries and the wider region. Priority sectors identified under the MoU include agri-food, clean technologies and energy transition, digital industries, advanced manufacturing and critical minerals. The agreement also enables knowledge sharing on sustainability practices, risk management and sustainable finance.

Alison Nankivell, president and CEO of EDC, noted that the partnership is particularly important in bolstering sectors such as clean technology, infrastructure and digital industries, where Canadian expertise can drive sustainable growth in Thailand and the broader region.

Charat Rattanaboonniti, president of EXIM Thailand, stated that through this collaboration, Thailand could enhance access to financing, foster business connections and unlock opportunities for both Thai and Canadian companies across Asia-Pacific.

The scale of existing trade between the two nations underlines the significance of this agreement. In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Thailand reached approximately CA$7.4 billion. Canadian exports to Thailand reached CA$1.14 billion in 2025, reflecting a cumulative average growth rate of over 7 percent from 2020 to 2025.

For business owners, investors and entrepreneurs operating in Thailand, developments like this can open new avenues for cross-border investment, financing access and sector-specific partnerships, particularly in the areas of clean energy, digital industries and advanced manufacturing.
