Thailand is positioning itself to capture a share of the growing global pink economy, which currently holds an estimated market value of around US$4 trillion and could reach up to US$7 trillion within five years.

These figures were shared at the Bangkok Post Pride Dialogue 2026, co-organised by the Bangkok Post and the Australian Embassy in Bangkok, held at Emsphere. Tanachai Kulsomboonsin, chief executive and co-founder of Canvas Ventures International, spoke on the topic of "Pink Economy: From Visibility to Economic Value," noting that awareness of this sector has expanded significantly in Thailand over the past two years.

The pink economy refers to the purchasing power and economic influence of the LGBTQ+ community. Mr Tanachai noted that up to one-third of Gen Z consumers identify as LGBTQ+, forming a broad and increasingly influential consumer base. He also pointed out that the pink economy now extends to allies and wider communities, further expanding its economic footprint.

Tourism remains the dominant sector, recording growth of approximately 7.8%, followed by fintech, insurance and healthcare. Emerging areas include creative industries, aesthetic healthcare, surrogacy services and digital platforms. Financial services are also being reshaped by demand for tailored products that reflect diverse family structures and modern lifestyles.

Thailand's marriage equality law was highlighted as a factor strengthening the country's appeal as an inclusive destination, supporting its ability to attract investment, talent and visitors. Mr Tanachai suggested Bangkok could emerge as a regional hub for LGBTQ+ investment and talent across Asia-Pacific.

He also issued a caution to businesses looking to engage with this market, stating that superficial inclusion, sometimes referred to as "rainbow washing," will not be sustainable. "Consumers are far more aware and far more demanding," he said.

For businesses, investors and expats in Thailand, this is a relevant development to follow. As the legal and regulatory landscape continues to evolve alongside shifting market trends, understanding the commercial and structural implications of policies such as marriage equality is increasingly relevant for those making long-term decisions about investment, business formation and asset planning in Thailand.
