Honda targets hybrid EV leadership in the Thai market

2026-07-03 Honda targets hybrid EV leadership in the Thai market

Honda Automobile (Thailand) has announced an ambitious strategy to challenge Chinese-dominated electric vehicle sales in Thailand by positioning hybrid electric vehicles as the core of its lineup.

According to a report published by the Bangkok Post on 3 July 2026, Honda expects nearly 90% of the cars it sells in Thailand to be hybrid EVs by 2029. The company is promoting its e:HEV technology, which combines an electric motor with a petrol engine capable of switching between generating electricity and powering the wheels. Honda president and CEO Koji Iwanami highlighted the system's ability to recharge automatically while driving and reduce fuel consumption, describing it as a cost-effective alternative to battery electric vehicles.

Honda recently launched four new Honda City models in Thailand and projects sales of 40,000 units over one year, with 31,000 units already sold between January and May 2026. The company is targeting total sales of 76,000 units in Thailand this year, against a domestic market expected to reach 660,000 units in total.

Globally, Honda announced plans to reduce the cost of its next-generation hybrid systems by more than 30% compared with previous versions, enabling competitive local pricing to directly challenge Chinese battery EV manufacturers. Mr Iwanami stated that Honda expects hybrid EVs to outperform battery EVs and help Japanese automakers regain market share in Thailand.

Honda also called on the Thai government to extend local content requirements, currently applied to internal combustion engine vehicles, to battery EVs, with a target of more than 90% domestic component sourcing. The company reaffirmed Thailand as a key Southeast Asian manufacturing and export hub, citing its Prachinburi plant, which was built with a 17-billion-baht investment following the 2011 Ayutthaya floods.

Looking ahead, Honda forecasts that hybrid EVs will capture 52% of Thailand's car market by 2029, followed by battery EVs at 33% and internal combustion engine vehicles at 13%.

For those living, investing or operating businesses in Thailand, shifts in the automotive sector can signal broader economic trends worth monitoring, including supply chain development, government policy direction and investment in local manufacturing.
