Bangchak fuels North Asia push with B9bn Caltex petrol stations deal
Thailand's Bangchak Corporation has completed the acquisition of 100% of shares in Chevron Hong Kong from Chevron Companies (China) in a deal worth HK$2.1 billion, equivalent to approximately 9 billion baht. The transaction was announced on Tuesday and marks a significant step in Bangchak's regional expansion strategy.
Following the acquisition, Bangchak will continue to operate the service stations under the Caltex brand through a licensing agreement with Chevron. The acquired business, now renamed Bangchak Hong Kong, operates a diversified energy portfolio that includes 31 service stations across Hong Kong, as well as industrial fuels and marine fuels operations. The company reported revenue of HK$10.5 billion and profit after tax of HK$263.3 million as of the end of 2024.
Chaiwat Kovavisarach, Group CEO and President of Bangchak, described the deal as an important milestone, stating that Bangchak Hong Kong would serve as the group's trading and commercial hub in North Asia, connecting its retail, trading, and marine fuels businesses with the broader Bangchak network.
According to a source cited by the South China Morning Post, the sale by Chevron was influenced by several factors, including declining fuel demand in Hong Kong, the growing popularity of electric vehicles, an increasing trend of Hong Kong motorists refuelling across the border, and strong competition from mainland Chinese energy companies.
Bangchak noted that Hong Kong's position as a leading financial, trading, maritime and aviation hub makes it a strategic platform for further regional growth. The deal is also described as one of the largest acquisitions by a company from the 11-member ASEAN economic bloc at a time when the Greater Bay Area and ASEAN are working to strengthen trade ties.
For businesses and investors operating across Southeast and North Asia, this kind of cross-border consolidation in the energy sector reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of regional commerce and investment flows.
