Avatar attraction to anchor Asiatique renovation

Major development news out of Bangkok that investors and business owners in Thailand will want to take note of.

SET-listed Asset World Corp (AWC) has announced an 8-billion-baht investment to redevelop Asiatique The Riverfront in Bangkok, transforming it into a family-oriented destination anchored by global intellectual property brands.

The headline project is a new attraction called "Avatar: Guardians of Eywa", developed in collaboration with EMM Williams Productions. It will feature immersive experiences and live acrobatic performances, and represents the first Avatar licensing debut in Southeast Asia. The Avatar trilogy directed by James Cameron is the world's highest-grossing film trio, having generated more than US$6 billion in global box office revenue.

The Avatar attraction is projected to span 4,000 square metres and will form part of the broader Blue Dome project, covering 16,000 square metres. The Blue Dome structure is being brought over from the Osaka World Expo and was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. Blue Dome is scheduled to open later this year, with the Avatar experience set to follow in early 2027.

AWC president and CEO Wallapa Traisorat described the vision as creating a "global hub of experience" across the site's 224,000 square metres. The company expects daily visitor traffic at Asiatique to increase to more than 50,000 people following the new launches, up from the current 30,000 to 40,000. Asiatique recorded 81% occupancy in the first quarter of this year, with visitor traffic growing 16% year-on-year.

Additional plans for the site include new parking facilities, expanded food and beverage offerings, more attractions, a new cable car crossing the Chao Phraya River to connect with the Charoen Nakhon side, and the Mona Bangkok art museum.
